The solomothers list is provided by NCSMC and hosted by the National Women's Justice co-alition via The Australian Virtual centre for Women and the Law
The list aims to facilitate discussion and exchange on issues affecting single mothers in Australia. Such issues include but are not limited to: * social policy * family law * child support * housing: income support * poverty * parenting * sexuality & reproduction * women's and children's health * domestic violence & post-separation violence and other issues affecting single mothers.
Who is able to join:
This list is for those who support the purposes of the National Council for the Single Mother and their Children (see below) and are:
* single mothers and their children (including ex-nuptial pregnancies, separated or divorced mothers, widows, relinquishing mothers). * single parent organisations * organisations providing services to single parents and their children * friends and supporters of single mothers and their children

Objectives of NCSMC
- To Advocate for the interests of sole parent families in the government , legal and community sectors.
- To act as a central focus for those concerned with sole parent issues and to facilitate discussion and co-operation between relevant government and non government agencies.
- T o promote and facilitate positive parent / child relationships where appropriate to the safety and well being of the child.
- To conduct promote and participate in research on matters affecting sole parent families.
- To encourage and support existing organisations and the formation of member organisations in any state or territory in which they do not already exist.
Description of Services provided by NCSMC
Fighting for the rights of single mothers and their children to the benefit of all sole parent families.
The National Council for Single Mothers and their Children (NCSMC) is a self help group set up in 1973 by a group of women who gave birth to children without being married to the child's father. This organisation of single mothers and ex-nuptial children has since then consistently fought for the basic and essential rights of all sole parent families. The NCSMC was formed to act as a national voice for the existing network of state based councils in Australia
- NCSMC provides information to
Members, Government, Media, Community agencies and organisations. From Members, Media, Community Agencies and organisations.
- Policy Planning and Formulation
On Behalf of Membership and wider sole parent community.
- Linking and Support
Between Members, Government and other agencies to organisations concerned with sole parent issues.
- Community Education
Through Media Activity , Attendance at Public Events, Participation in Community Fora, Lectures at Universities, Schools and service organisations , Provision of Information and resource lists.
- Analysis
Of Government Policy and Programmes, Social trends and sole parent Issues .
- Advocacy
On Behalf of single mothers, Sole Parent Families and member organisations.
- Research
Into Specific Issues affecting single mother and other sole parent families.
- Consultation
With Members, Policy makers, Business, Welfare sector, and particular sub populations within single parent families ( eg adolescent children of single mothers, Single Parents from non English speaking backgrounds (NESB), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Single Parents (ATSI) etc .)
- Representation
On Working Parties, Forums and panels with respect to Single Parent Issues .
- Referral
Of Individuals, members , media, government and community organisations and agencies to appropriate sources of needed input. |

Solo Mothers and their Children WA (SMCWA)
SMCWA is a support and advocacy group for solo mothers and their children. This program provides support, advocacy, information and referral at the individual level, as well as support, advocacy and representation for solo Mums and their families at the broader community and sociopolitical levels. The aims of SMCWA are:
- To ensure that children of solo mothers have a fair start in life.
- To recognise solo mothers and their children as a positive family unit.
- To promote the understanding and acceptance of solo mothers and their children in the community so that they may be free from prejudice.
- To work for improvements in the social, economic and legal status of solo mothers and their children.
- To advocate for the interests of sole parent families in the government, legal and community sectors.
- To promote and facilitate positive parent/child relationships where appropriate to the safety and well being of the child.
- To promote and participate in research on matters affecting sole parent families.
- To act as an initial point of contact for solo mothers in order to provide information and refer them to appropriate agencies.
Solo Mothers and their Children WA works for improvements in the social,
economic and legal status of solo mothers and their children to the benefit of all sole parent families.
SMCWA offers a range of assistance to solo Mums and their children including information, support, representation and referral. (see SMCWA brochure)
